Washington Post angers subscribers with web-only story

NEW YORK - The Washington Post has angered print edition subscribers by publishing a two-part in-depth report on a local murder online only.

The lengthy piece of investigative journalism looked at the unsolved 2006 murder of Robert Wone, who was found stabbed to death in a townhouse shared by three men reportedly living in a polyamorous relationship.
The feature reported that detectives investigating the case suspect one or more of the men is the murderer but that there is not enough evidence to mount a prosecution.
The story appeared on May 31 and June 1, with the Washington Post staff reportedly deciding not to publish it in the print edition because of cost pressures.
The New York Times reports one of the Post's readers was moved to write: "Newspapers are going broke in part because news can be read, free of charge, on the Internet.
"As a nearly lifelong reader of the Post, I could not read this article in the paper I pay for and subscribe to -- instead I came on it accidentally while scrolling online for business reasons."
