Grand Designs house to be given away on Twitter
LONDON - An £800,000 house that starred on Channel 4's property show 'Grand Designs' is being given away to a Twitter user after failing to sell.
The house in Cheltenham, which is built partially underground, featured on the property show in 2007.
Its owner Tim Bawtree has failed to sell the property as housing prices have plummeted.
Bawtree has therefore decided to give the house away if a website linked to Twitter fills up with enough paid-for ads to raise £820,000, which would cover the price of the house, costs and a donation to the services' charity Help for Heroes.
He is hoping that the house's homepage attracts an army of visitors, which will draw in advertisers to buy the online ads, being sold at £200 a block.
Bawtree needs 90% of the blocks to be filled in order for the give-away offer to be activated.
A winner will then be chosen at random from the Twitter users who have chosen to follow the house's Twitter feed -- @pixhome.
Bawtree said: "Similar things have been done, but there was no hook. The hook here is that people can win a house for free, which will drive traffic from Twitter to the home page."
The page is similar to the Million Dollar Homepage, which made student Alex Tew a fortune when advertisers bought pixels on a giant grid.
