Royal Opera House to host first opera online

The Royal Opera House (ROH) has launched a website to host its first full-length opera online.

On 5 October visitors to the site will be able to watch Mozart's Don Giovanni, which was filmed on the opening night of the 2008/09 season.

The show will be divided into 12 chapters allowing users to skip ads and rewatch sections as they would on DVDs.

The free online show comes as the ROH looks to expand its audience and be more inclusive.

The new site will also allow users to customise content and receive personalise recommendations of shows and events. Users will be able to book and browse history and photo albums of productions.

Tony Hall, chief executive of ROH, said, "The fast changing digital technologies are bringing more and more opportunities for us to share our work, bringing it direct into homes from Canada to China, from Alaska to Australia."

The Royal Opera House site currently has 500,000 unique users, and a Facebook page has almost 10,000 fans.
