BBC launches multi-platform global economy project

The BBC has launched a multi-platform project to explain how the global economy operates.

The Box is a year-long project for BBC News that aims to tell the story of international trade and globalisation by tracking a standard shipping container around the world.

A sea-going container has been painted and branded in BBC livery and a GPS transmitter has been attached to allow the web audience to track its location all year round as it criss-crosses the globe.

The Box should reach the US, Asia, the Middle East, Europe and Africa and when it does its progress will be followed by BBC correspondents who will report on who's producing goods and who's consuming them.

The public are being asked to send in their pictures of The Box if they see it on their travels and the entire project can be accessed through a dedicated website bbc.co.uk/thebox that will host interactive maps and text, picture and video reports.

The project will not cost the BBC anything above the usual associated editorial costs as the container is not owned by the BBC, it's merely branded and is a normal 'working' container.
